Why I became an editor
I've always loved reading and writing; hence, I studied English literature at university and went on to teach English at a secondary school. I never thought a career in editing was attainable unless I moved to a big city. However, this opportunity has allowed me to go back to my roots and do something that I am incredibly passionate about. To me, proofreading is the ideal job, as it allows me to combine my love for reading, writing, and helping others to achieve their goals.
Background and experience
I worked as an English teacher at a secondary school and spent many hours checking students' work for spelling and grammatical errors. I also worked as a sixth form learning mentor, which involved proofreading students' personal statements for their university placements. I especially loved this part, as I felt that I was a stepping stone to my students' future success.
Why I love proofreading and editing
I love making a piece of writing error-free and fit for purpose. I get pleasure from seeing my clients succeed, and there's nothing better than being a part of that process! I am a real wordsmith and a voracious reader, so I like reading about a number of topics. However, I especially enjoy proofreading and editing academic texts and creative writing pieces.
Favorite book:
My favorite book from childhood was The Faraway Tree collection by Enid Blyton. My favorite book as an adult is The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.
Hobbies:
When I'm not proofreading, I enjoy walking my border collie, Oscar. I also enjoy playing cricket for my local women's team.
Editing tips:
I like to proofread for one type of error at a time. I also like to read the text aloud to get a feel for the author's voice.
