Going to university isn’t all about studying. Don’t get us wrong: it’s important to keep up with your work and getting your writing proofread is a great way of making sure it’s always top notch!
But going to university is also about new experiences, making friends and growing as a person. This is especially true during your first year, so we’ve compiled a list of ten things to help freshers thrive in their new surroundings.
1. Make New Friends
Being in an unfamiliar place can be intimidating, but when you move into halls everyone else will be in the same situation. Talk to people in your corridor and you’ll soon meet lots of new people.
2. Explore Your University
Getting to know your university early on will save time later. Wandering around with new friends can also be a great way of getting to know one another.
3. Social Media
Most universities run social media accounts on platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Following these can help you keep track of all the latest information.
4. Students’ Unions
Your students’ union will provide a range of activities and resources for new students. A National Union of Students (NUS) Extra card will also allow you to access student discounts.
5. Freshers’ Week
The freshers’ week at your university is designed for new students, so take advantage of it while you can. If nothing else you can pick up a few freebies from companies offering promotions!

6. Societies
Joining a few university societies/sport clubs is a great way of meeting new people and trying new activities. Often there’ll be a Freshers’ Fair organised so you can see the options available.
7. Freshers’ Flu
The dreaded “freshers’ flu” is inevitable when so many people suddenly arrive in one place. Do your best to avoid it by staying hygienic (showering regularly, washing hands before eating, etc.)
8. Budgeting
If you’re not careful you might find your student loan disappears quite quickly. Budgeting wisely can save you from having to survive on nothing but noodles come the end of term!
9. Part-Time Work
Try asking at the students’ union if you’re looking for a job, as often there’ll be work available in union bars/shops.
10. Get Involved & Have Fun!
The first year is the perfect time to throw yourself into the social side of university life. Just remember to stay safe while having fun!
