5 Things to Do with the Rest of Your Summer Break

August is here and we’re well into summer. For students, this season is a time of opportunity. Some people work, earning extra money for the coming academic year. Others get some studying done. Perhaps you’re reading this on a beach, halfway through the holiday of a lifetime.*

Slowly baking under the sun's glare... we're not jealous at all.

But maybe you’ve done nothing, instead letting the days slip by in a happy, idle daze. That’s also fine. However, should you decide to use the rest of your summer break more productively, we do have a few suggestions.

1. Spontaneous Vacation

So you’ve left it a bit late to plan a holiday, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out!

If you’ve got your passport handy, you can always hop on Skyscanner and use the ‘Everywhere’ search to find the cheapest flight destinations from an airport near you.

Last-minute flights can be expensive, though, and foreign travel might require additional preparation, so you might be better off looking closer to home. After all, you have plenty of adventure-on-a-budget options within the UK!

Just stick out a thumb and see where life takes you.

2. Local Exploration

Maybe you don’t fancy going anywhere at all. In that case, why not explore your local town?

This might seem dull – especially if you’re back home with family in the place where you grew up – but you’d be surprised how a little investigation can turn up some hidden gems.

3. Get Outside and Get Fit!

Even in the UK, summer is generally warmer and sunnier than the rest of the year. As such, it might be time to get some exercise outside of the sweaty confines of the gym!

Admittedly, you’ll probably be sweating just as much in the outdoors. But at least you’ll be getting some fresh air while you’re at it.

4. Binge Watch Everything

If the idea of exercise and sunlight makes you nervous, perhaps an indoor activity would be better. And what better time than the summer break to binge watch the latest TV sensations?

This might not seem like a productive use of your summer. But if it means you don’t miss lectures once the academic year begins, just because you wanted to watch one more (always one more) episode of Game of Thrones, then it might be worthwhile.

5. Read Something

Of course, you could get a head start on your university reading for next year. But – and this might sound shocking – you could also try reading for pleasure.

Most of us forget this is possible after a year or two as students, since we’re so tired of the reading we have to do for our courses. But this is why the summer break is the ideal time to rediscover a love of classic literature! Or, alternatively, whatever trashy novels you secretly love reading!

* If this is the case, we admire you simply for being the kind of person who reads a proofreading blog on the beach. Kudos.
