Energise! 6 Ways to Boost Energy Levels while Writing an Essay

Keeping your energy up while writing an essay is rarely easy. No matter how much you care and want to do well, eventually fatigue (and tedium) will kick in. And, simply put, tiredness is a concentration killer, so it will affect your ability to work.

How, then, do you keep your energy levels high and stay productive while you work?

1. Physical Maintenance

Your energy levels are fundamentally connected to your physical wellbeing. This means that eating well, drinking plenty of water and exercising can go a long way towards combatting fatigue.

This is especially true if you adjust your diet to optimise your energy levels, but even small things – keeping healthy snacks on hand, or going out for a brisk walk during the working day – can help increase concentration in the short term.

Loading up on caffeine pills is not a healthy alternative.

2. Know Your Working Habits

We’re all a little bit different, so knowing your own working habits is essential. This includes many things, such as the time of day you feel productive, being aware of getting distracted and considering the environment in which you work most effectively.

If you know you’re more productive in the evening than the morning, for example, you can plan your working day around this. Likewise, if you struggle to focus at home, try finding somewhere else to work. This will help you to make the most of your time and energy.

3. Give Yourself a Break

Nobody can concentrate for too long without getting distracted (some studies put the average human attention span at a mere eight seconds, which is a little depressing for us as a species). As such, forcing yourself to work can be counterproductive.

If you’re struggling for ideas and enthusiasm while working, try taking a short break. You might find you return feeling refreshed and ready to write!

4. Get Some Sunlight

Since students and other academics spend a lot of time hidden in libraries and lecture rooms (or sleeping through the day), it’s not surprising that we don’t always get out in the sun enough.

But that big fiery ball in the sky is important! Getting enough sunlight is vital to maintaining a positive mood, good sleeping habits and energy levels. So try to go outdoors now and then.

There is such a thing as too much sun.

5. Relax, Be Happy

Stress is a major drain on your energy, so worrying too much about your work (or life outside of university) can affect your productivity.

Try to be aware of the signs of stress and, wherever possible, give yourself time to relax.

6. Zzzzzzz… (Stay Rested)

Of course, the most important thing you can do to maintain health energy levels is get a good night’s sleep now and then! This means making sure you have a regular sleeping routine and that your bedroom is a suitably restful environment.

And, of course, you should never underestimate the benefits of a good nap.
