Why I became an editor
I have had a passion for languages since childhood, when I started learning French, German, and Latin at school. I love learning how languages are constructed. I have always enjoyed reading, word puzzles, and cryptic crosswords. I also have excellent attention to detail. So, editing combines my natural abilities and passions!
Background and experience
I studied Linguistics and International Studies at university, and I taught French for many years. After gaining a TEFL qualification, I taught English online to Chinese children. I can appreciate the difficulties students have in learning and mastering languages in different forms. I have proofreading experience as well, and I recently completed the Becoming A Proofreader course with distinction.
Why I love proofreading and editing
I find it very satisfying to make a piece of writing read more smoothly. I like to make it clear and concise, and of course to correct any spelling and grammatical errors and inconsistencies. I feel that I provide a final fresh pair of eyes!
Favorite book:
Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne—a fun adventure novel that my young son enjoyed having me reading aloud to him!
Hobbies:
I like to stay fit and healthy by taking walks in the Cornish countryside and along the coast, doing Pilates, and working out. I love to play the piano, and I am learning the ukulele for fun!
Editing tips:
I think it’s important to skim read the text before proofreading it to get an overall sense of the style and the author’s voice.
