5 Tips on How to Write a Letter to Santa
At this time of year, Santa looks forward to receiving letters from children everywhere, letting him know what presents they want. He is very busy, though, so why not use our tips to make sure your letter stands out?
1. Get Ready to Write
Before you start your letter, it is important to prepare properly:
- Get in a festive mood by putting on some Christmas music.
- If you have one, put on your favourite Christmas jumper.
- Think about the presents you want so you can write a neat list when you start and won’t need to cross anything out.
- Find some nice paper and a pen that you like writing with.
Once you’ve done all this, you’ll be ready to write!
2. Starting Your Letter
When you are ready to write your letter, start by putting your name and address in the top right-hand corner of the page. This is important as it will help Santa find you so he can get the right presents to you.
Next, start the letter itself by writing ‘Dear Santa’. You should always use ‘Dear’ before a person’s name at the start of a formal or polite letter, especially if you do not know the person you’re writing to very well.
And before you get to the presents, introduce yourself by telling Santa your name, age, and why you are writing. This will help him find the right gifts. You could even ask how Santa and his elves are doing if you like!
After this, you can move on to what you want for Christmas.
3. Asking for Presents
The next bit is very important! This is where you can tell Santa what presents you would like, but don’t forget to ask politely! Being polite when you write to someone is important, and Santa will be sure to appreciate it.

All you need to do is write each present down one after another. If you have thought about your list beforehand, it should be easy to make your list neat. And don’t forget to include enough detail for Santa to get the right things!
You could even include gifts for other people here. Who do you know who deserves a nice present? If you can think of someone, add them to the list!
4. Finishing Your Letter
End your letter with ‘Yours sincerely’ and your name. This is a polite way of ending a letter when you know someone’s name (in this case, Santa). If you don’t know their name, you would use ‘Yours faithfully’ instead.
Why not decorate your letter as well? You could use stickers or draw a nice pattern as a border. You could even think about drawing a picture of Rudolph and the other reindeer. Make it look pretty and have fun!
Before you put your letter in an envelope, ask a grown-up to check it for mistakes. Santa will be very impressed if you send a neat, error free letter.
5. Send It to Santa
In the UK, the Royal Mail looks after letters to Santa. To send yours, you’ll need to put a stamp on the envelope and address it to:
Santa/Father Christmas
Santa’s Grotto
Reindeerland
XM4 5HQ
You can ask an adult to help you write the address to make sure it doesn’t go to the wrong place! Next, take your letter to Santa to a post box and drop it in. After that, all you need to do is wait for the big day! Happy Christmas!
