7 Tips on Writing a Novel

The saying goes that everyone has a story in them; however, actually writing it may be easier said than done! If you want to embark on writing a novel, there are a few things that can help the process along.

1.     Catch a Fish

This ‘fish’ is the most important ingredient in the recipe for a novel: your best idea, the strongest and biggest one you have. Work out what this is as soon as you can.

2.     Prepare

Now you have your fish, it’s time to make a plan. Every writer works differently, so this is about finding a method that works for you.

You may want to write a brief summary of the whole novel, or a more detailed account of each chapter. The important thing to remember is the ending; if you already know how it ends, the rest of the novel should fall into place.

3.     Start Writing

Sounds simple, right? That’s because it is. Just write every day. Even if you can only do a paragraph, writing daily creates a positive habit that will keep you involved with your work.

4.     Ignore Delete

The delete key is not your friend, at least not at this stage (it will be later). For now, don’t worry too much about writing the perfect novel, or you may find yourself with a blank page.

Using a good old pen and notebook, or even a typewriter, might deter you from writing a few pages and then hitting delete.

5.     Stick to the Plan

If in doubt, refer to your plan. Some writers find it helpful to have an overview of their novel available to remind them where the story is going.

6.     Keep Going

Keep writing until you have a first draft. It may not be perfect but you should be proud of yourself for getting this far.

7.     Edit

Now you have your novel, don’t put it aside and forget about it. Edit it: once, twice, three times. More if needs be. If you simply can’t look at it any more, asking a professional to take a look can really help.
