How to Change the Spell Check Language in Microsoft Word

Spell check in Microsoft Word is a valuable tool. Many of us have come to depend on it for catching typos – perhaps without realizing it! The spellchecker follows a specific language and dialect, so it’ll even pick up regional differences in spelling.

But if you have a portion of text in a different language, or if you’re using a different dialect of English from the one already set, you may need to change the spell check language. In today’s post, we’ll show you how.

Changing the Spell Check Language, Step-By-Step

Highlight the text that you need to set to a different language. This could be the entire document or just a portion. If you haven’t started writing, click on the point where you’ll begin typing.

Go to the Review tab and select Language > Set Proofing Language.

A box will pop up, from which you can select your required language. The top of the box offers three English dialects, and underneath is a list of other languages you can choose from. Once you select one, make sure the box next to Do not check spelling or grammar is not ticked and hit OK.

If you’re using a Mac, follow the steps listed above, but when you get to the Review tab, select Language, choose the language you need, and hit OK.

Conclusion

Hopefully, you now feel confident changing the spell check language in Microsoft Word. Spell check can be handy, especially if you’re working with an unfamiliar dialect or have portions of your text in a different language.

Microsoft Word’s spellchecker is useful, but it can’t replace a human proofreader. So, make sure you have your work checked for spelling, grammar, punctuation, word choice, and formatting before you submit it. Our editors are happy to help you with this. Send in a sample for free today!
