Favorite referencing style
APA is my favorite all the way! It is a versatile referencing style (i.e., it can be used for a variety of subject matter) and provides the reader with enough information to check the source, but it doesn't clutter the text.
Why I became an editor
My mother, a non-native English speaker, would ask me to help her polish whatever documents she needed to write, from email correspondence to resumés. But it wasn't until graduate school that I started proofreading professionally. As a graduate student in a foreign country where I didn't speak the language, proofreading English documents for my university started as a practical way for me to support myself. I came to truly love the work and decided to pursue this path further.
Background and experience
I currently am a freelance proofreader, mostly specializing in scientific journal articles in the natural and social sciences. This is a role I started as a graduate student, but I have continued as a freelancer since finishing my degree. I have also published my own scientific journal article based on my master's thesis in hydrology and environmental management.
Why I love proofreading and editing
I am privileged to have primarily worked on scientific journal articles for publication in the natural and social sciences and have even published a scientific journal article myself, but I am open and eager to broaden these horizons with regard to subject matter and style. I am most experienced with APA referencing, having used this style in my own publication. I am particularly passionate about helping ESL authors.
Favorite book:
I am a product of my generation in that the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling would have to qualify as my favorite books. However, I enjoy reading non-fiction or stories based on true events.
Hobbies:
My hobbies include working out, cooking or baking vegan food, spending time with my dog and partner, doing yoga, reading, enjoying the outdoors, traveling, camping, hiking, kite surfing, and painting.
Editing tips:
I always do a preliminary read-through where I fix any glaring problems and get a feel for the author's voice, any document-specific vernacular, the intended audience, and consistent errors.
