Favorite referencing style
I am most familiar with the APA referencing style so I favor it more than the other style guides.
Why I became an editor
I love to read, but I shudder at writing errors. Just when you get to the good part, a typo rears its ugly head.
Unfortunately, such occurrence is not only limited to the world of fiction. Having proofread student learning and progress documentation, evaluation reports, and school marketing collateral in my previous work as head teacher, I realized that writing errors are generally bound to happen.
The good news, though, is that these oversights can be addressed, and there are individuals willing and able to help achieve that dream of a flawlessly written output. Wanting to be that kind of person finally spurred me to learn the proper way of proofreading.
Being a proofreader satisfies my penchant to spot and correct writing errors and my goal to lend a helping hand. It is rewarding to be able to contribute to the betterment of a writer’s work.
Background and experience
Eight years in reading and math remediation (5- to 17-year-old students), reading evaluation, and intervention planning and administration
Five years in early childhood education (six months to 6-year-old students)
Six years in school management (in-service training, teacher coaching, program quality, curriculum implementation, school events and activities, faculty and staff performance, and branch operations)
In terms of editing, I have proofread learning documentation, progress and assessment reports, marketing collateral, and school newsletter articles
Why I love proofreading and editing
My love for proofreading and editing started when I worked in special education. I enjoyed guiding my upper primary and high school students in revising and proofreading their work before handing in their final draft. Since then, I have found helping writers polish their work to be a fulfilling experience.
Favorite book:
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Hobbies:
When I’m not proofreading, I’m probably doing all sorts of things like being in my online master's class, teaching my godchild how to sound out the letters in the alphabet, devouring a good book, cuddling with my six dogs, practicing chucking on my ukulele, or making Zentangles.
Editing tips:
Concentration is key. I make sure that I have the space and time dedicated for proofreading so my focus is absolute.
Prior to editing, I read the material slowly and out loud to glean what it is about, hear how the words sound together, and write down any obvious writing lapses.
