I think the style that fits the message is the best.
Why I became an editor
A love of learning has led me through a varied career so far: working with animals, informal education, research, and more. My lifelong love of reading led me to study English in college and, more recently, to try copy editing and proofreading. I enjoy taking courses to build on the language skills that I have developed through my professional and personal life.
My path has not been a straight course but a journey along which I have honed skills and cultivated experiences. It is challenging and satisfying to use my language skills and my varied knowledge base to help others improve their writing.
Background and experience
Proofreading and editing have been a part of each facet of my professional career, which has included reviewing manuals, evaluations, research papers, documents, emails, and more. I have been an engaged reader throughout my life.
Why I love proofreading and editing
As an informal educator, I am especially fond of interpretation, or the presentation of facts in a stimulating, accessible format. As an editor, this helps me to gently rework an idea for clarity, to the benefit of the audience. As a bit of a perfectionist, I find rooting out small errors that detract from an overall message to be gratifying. The challenge presented by improving a final draft is intriguing, and I enjoy helping to bring out an author’s best.
Favorite book:
I've read Tolkien's The Hobbit and Edgar Allan Poe's short stories countless times. More recently, the Sherlock Holmes series was the one that I was guilty of "chain-reading."
Hobbies:
When I am not proofreading or otherwise reading, I usually can be found spending time with my husband and our menagerie of cats and dogs, educating people about wildlife, watching classic movies from the '40s, knitting/crocheting, or photographing and enjoying my habitat.
Editing tips:
I like to skim through the document first to get an overall sense and correct any spelling errors and the like that jump out. Then I can read through in more detail.
