Why I became an editor
After working for several years as a research scientist, the opportunity arose for my wife and I to move to rural North Yorkshire. I have always enjoyed working as a freelancer, and a career in editing and proofreading proved to be an ideal way to work from home. I now combine my academic experience with my love of writing and editing.
Background and experience
After earning my degree in physics, I worked in photography and television. Later, I studied for a PhD in climate change adaptation, worked as a researcher at De Montfort University, and as a senior research associate at Loughborough University. My roles included teaching, experimental research, grant application writing, and producing articles and papers. I’ve been trained in copyediting and proofreading by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading and Proofreading Academy.
Why I love proofreading and editing
I enjoy helping to improve all types of written communication. In particular, I believe that science is the means for most big world issues to be tackled, and it’s very important that scientific research is presented in a clear and engaging manner. I find it very rewarding to use my experience to improve communication through careful editing and proofreading.
Favorite book:
London Fields by Martin Amis
Hobbies:
My main hobby (when not walking my labrador) is photography. Living in the Yorkshire Dales provides endless landscape photo opportunities.
Editing tips:
I always go through every document at least twice and use checklists to make sure nothing has been missed.
